NEWPORT County AFC have signed forward Corey Whitely – with manager Michael Flynn revealing the rapid forward took a pay cut to sign for the Exiles.

The 27-year-old from Middlesex arrives from Ebbsfleet United on a two-year contract and will be an option for Flynn across the front line at Rodney Parade.

Whitely boasts plenty of experience in non-league football and has scored 35 goals and racked up 22 assists in the last three seasons.

He joined Ebbsfleet from fellow National League side Dagenham and Redbridge in January, 2018 and is relishing the chance to play in the Football League.

"I can't wait to get the ball rolling," said Whitely. "I like to get forward, I can play on the left, the right or in behind the strikers. I'm buzzing, I am really looking forward to getting started.

"I can't wait to meet up with the boys, get to know them and get pre-season underway and obviously then the season."

Whitely worked shifts at his local Iceland supermarket before becoming a professional and his new boss was impressed that the forward is motivated by what he can achieve at the Exiles rather than financial gain.

South Wales Argus:

Flynn said: "Corey is a very exciting player. He is a player with lots of pace and can also play in a number of different attacking positions.

"Corey has taken a pay cut to sign and play for this football club which already shows me his desire to play well for Newport County AFC. I can't wait to see him in action."

Whitely joins goalkeeper Tom King and defenders Lazar Stojsavljevic, Dan Leadbitter and Marvel Ekpiteta in signing for the Exiles ahead of the League Two campaign.
