NEWPORT’S Remi Adebiyi has qualified for Sunday’s 3000m steeplechase final at the European Under-20 Championships in Sweden.
The 18-year-old, making his Great Britain debut in Boras, finished second in his heat in a time of 9:04.46mins.
Darryn McAtee-trained Adebiyi came home just behind Hungary’s Levente Szemerei in the first of this morning’s two heats and was the fourth fastest qualifier overall.
World-class Belgian Tim Van De Velde was the quickest in qualifying, winning his semi-final ahead of Portugal’s Etson Barros.
Van De Velde clocked 9:03.64mins but is set to go a lot faster when the medals are up for grabs at Ryavallen Athletic Stadium on Sunday (2.54pm BST).
Fifteen athletes will take to the track for the final, including Adebiyi’s GB teammate Kristian Imroth, who ran 9:05.96mins to finish fifth in heat.
