Newport County's Momodou Touray joins Torquay United on loan

Touray spent last season on loan at Barry Town United, winning the Welsh Premier League young player of the year award after scoring 13 goals in 31 league appearances.

The 20-year-old is behind Padraig Amond, Jamille Matt and new signing Tristan Abrahams in the queue for a starting spot up front.

Ade Azeez has been ruled out for six months with an Achilles injury and manager Michael Flynn is hoping to bring in another striker before the transfer window closes on September 2.

Starting his career as the stand-out star of the County in the Community futsal team, Touray worked hard to earn himself a starting place in the Exiles’ talented Youth Alliance Merit League-winning under-18 side in 2017.

The Wales under-21 international signed his first professional contract with County in April 2018 and made his first-team debut at Carlisle United the following month.

After his success at Barry, Touray was rewarded with a one-year extension to his deal at Rodney Parade and has trained played a full part in the pre-season preparations this summer.

He joins a Torquay side who won the National League South last season under the management of Gary Johnson.

“He played in one of our pre-season friendlies not so long ago and he was recommended to me by a player that used to play for me as a centre-forward,” revealed Johnson.

“He said he might become available, he might not, so we had a chance to have a look at him a couple of times and he looks to have a lot of potential.

“He’s only just 20, he was 20 two days ago, he comes from Gambia, the same as Saiks [former loan forward Saikou Janneh], he knows Saiks quite well and he reminds me of Saiks.

"He’s got that quality of keeping hold of the ball, he works hard and if, at the end of the month, he’s enjoyed it and we’ve enjoyed it then that’s another great addition to our squad as a striker.”
