COUNTY star and Wales international Nick Kenny hit top form against Mike Grout in Pontnewydd’s 5-2 victory over lowly Talywain in the Gwent Super League.

Kenny, who recently won both the Belgian and French Open titles on the BDO tour to move up to ninth in the season rankings, struck an unbelievable 36.66 (109.98) average as he saw off Grout with a polished performance.

Wins for Pontnewydd also came for the evergreen Peter Johns, who leads the men’s averages, Jesse Heal, Mark Blandford and Ray Hardwick, while Rhys Jenkins and Jason Blatchford claimed two vital points for the visitors who remain bottom of the league.

Elsewhere, Chepstow FC’s Jon Worsley showed his consistency with a 90-plus average in his team’s win over Cross Keys.

Leaders Gilfach were knocked off the top despite a narrow win against Crumlin Rugby, Hafodyrynys taking over at the summit after thumping the Dodger 7-0.

Wednesday night sees Baneswell visit Gilfach.

Rhian Griffiths (Brynmawr) and Tracey Hickey (Golddiggers) led the way in the averages in the Ladies Super League in comfortable wins over Garndiffaith and Top Club Risca respectively, which saw Golddiggers return to the top of the league.

Newcomers Cwmbran Rugby showed they are serious title contenders with a 6-1 triumph at Newport.

Cheryl Jones and Kimberley Lewis, just called into the Gwent squad, won tough encounters with Mandy Cosslett and former Welsh youth international Megan Vodden, while St Joes won a narrow match 4-3 against Cwmcarn.

A potential star match-up could take place on Wednesday night as Michelle Mellish’s Cwmcarn visit Griffith’s Brynmawr.

Hickey joins Jones and Lewis in the Gwent squad for British Inter-County Championship season opener against Gwynedd at Hafodyrynys on September 14-15.

Bryan Flew (Aberbargoed), Lee Harris (Chepstow FC), Jesse Heal (Pontnewydd), Paul Linwood (Baneswell), Nathan Perry (Pontypool) and Alan Walker (Hafodyrynys) has also been selected.
