HAFODYRYNYS remain top of the Gwent Super League on leg difference from Chepstow FC following a narrow 4-3 victory over visiting Brynmawr, writes Morgan Barrell.

Brynmawr county player Gethyn Bennett produced the performance of the evening with a 31.31 (93.93) average in a convincing win over Rhys Powell.

But Stephen Cake, Alan Walker, Liam Meek and Carl Lloyd all won for the Hafod to claim victory.

Pontnewydd's Wales international Mark Blandford equalled Bennett's performance in a win over Cross Keys’ Tom Crabbe, as his side won 5-2 to move up to fifth place in pursuit of a third consecutive title.

Elsewhere, Scott Ridler returned to form with a solid 90+ average in helping Baneswell beat Gilfach – he also leads the ton table on 46 from the opening five matches of the season.

Aberbargoed, Tredegar Cons, Chepstow, Chepstow FC and Abergavenny all claimed wins, while Wednesday night’s standout fixture sees the top two go head to head as Hafodyrynys visit Chepstow FC.

In the Ladies Super League, Cwmbran Rugby moved to the top of the table in their debut season, as Gwent's Kimberley Lewis and Cheryl Jones, plus Amanda Willard, all secured vital points to see their side clinch a 5-2 triumph over visiting Ebbw Vale.

Lewis, a former Welsh international, showed her talent in a 3-0 win over Susan Wall, hitting a 23.86 (71.58) average in the process as she returns to the county team this weekend after a short absence.

Wins in the ladies’ league also came for Top Club Risca, Newport and Brynmawr.

Things are getting very tight at the top of the league with Golddiggers aiming to return to the summit at Garndiffaith on Wednesday night after last week’s bye.

This weekend sees Gwent host Gwynedd at Hafodyrynys in the opening fixture in the British Inter-Counties Championship.

The B teams take to the stage on Saturday (noon start), while the A teams clash on Sunday (11am start).

Entrance is £4 per person for both days and includes a programme.
