NEWPORT County's FA Cup opponents Grimsby Town have sacked boss Michael Jolley following a run of seven games without a win.

News of Jolley's departure was announced today, less than a week before the Mariners travel to Rodney Parade for their first-round replay with the Exiles.

Last Saturday's 1-1 draw between the teams at Blundell Park proved to be Jolley's final match, with Grimsby lying 16th in League Two, seven points off both the relegation zone and promotion places.

A club statement read: "Anthony Limbrick and Dave Moore will be placed in charge as interim manager and assistant manager respectively, starting with our all-important FA Cup first round replay away at Newport County on Wednesday.

"The club would like to place on record its thanks to Michael for his hard work and efforts since joining the club during a difficult period in March 2018 and would like to wish him all the best for the future."

Meanwhile, Leyton Orient chairman Nigel Travis says he would he recommend Carl Fletcher as a manager, despite sacking him after just 29 days.

Former Wales midfielder Fletcher was dismissed after failing to win any of his five matches.

Businessman Travis, who wrote a book called The Challenge Culture on the subject of leadership, took to talkSPORT to explain the ruthless decision.

"The cultural fit wasn't right," he said. "We don't blame Carl, we kind of blame ourselves.

"It's kind of embarrassing for me having written a book on culture, having failed to see it.

"We'd recommend Carl, he did some terrific things on the training field, it just didn't fit."

However, Travis also said: "It's gone spectacularly wrong and we recognise that.

"The thing that didn't work was the engagement with the community, with the players, with the club, the fans.

"We could see people weren't enjoying themselves, we decided rather than let this go on – to be fair to Carl and fair to us – we had to make a change."

Fletcher's final game was Orient's shock FA Cup defeat at home by non-league Maldon & Tiptree who could be Newport's next opponents.
