WALES got the win they needed in Azerbaijan to keep a place at Euro 2020 within their grasp thanks to goals from Kieffer Moore and Harry Wilson.

Wigan Athletic striker Moore scored his second goal in four internationals when he headed in Wilson’s corner from close range in the 10th minute in Baku.

And Wilson was in the right place at the right time to nod into an open goal after Dan James’ shot from the edge of the area rebounded off bar and post.

Ryan Giggs’ men must now beat Hungary in Cardiff on Tuesday night and hope that Slovakia drop points in Croatia tonight or at home to Azerbaijan on Tuesday to secure their place in the tournament next summer.

Giggs made three changes from last month’s 1-1 draw at home to Croatia with Juventus midfielder Aaron Ramsey starting on the bench after returning from injury.

That meant Joe Morrell replaced the suspended Joe Allen in midfield, while Chris Mepham and Wilson came in for injured duo Joe Rodon and Jonny Williams.

Gareth Bale captained the side again with Ashley Williams on the bench alongside Newport County AFC goalkeeper Tom King.

Wales are 24th in the FIFA world rankings, 87 places above Azerbaijan in 111th, and they quickly took control of the match at the Bakcell Arena.

Wilson should have done better with a weak effort that was deflected wide and Morrell forced a fine flying save from goalkeeper Emil Balayev before Moore headed in from the resulting corner.

That goal means Moore has now scored more goals in four games for Wales this season than he has in 14 club appearances for Wigan.

And the 6ft 4ins front man could have had a hat-trick before the break.

He headed straight at Balayev after a good turn and cross from Bale on the right flank and Moore was then denied by the on-rushing goalkeeper after a neat pass inside the home defence from the impressive James.

Manchester United winger James deserved a goal after cutting in from the left and unleashing a superb shot from 18 yards that beat Balayev but came back off the woodwork for Wilson to double Wales’ lead in the 34th minute.

South Wales Argus:

The hosts enjoyed a short spell of pressure before the break and could have won a penalty when a shot from Dimitrij Nazarov hit the hand of Tom Lockyer in the box.

But Wales survived that nervy period and always looked in charge of the match after the break.

Lockyer thought he’d added the third goal when headed in from a corner six minutes after the break but Ethan Ampadu was penalised for a foul on the keeper.

Wilson was denied a second goal by an excellent save from Balayev, down low to his left, before Ramsey replaced Bale on the hour to make his first appearance of the campaign.

The former Arsenal midfielder, who took the captain’s armband and played in Moore straightaway, but the striker’s shot was deflected just wide.

Moore, who dominated in the air throughout, had three more efforts but he couldn’t hit the target with two headers from Wilson crosses or a shot from the right of the penalty area.
