CHEPSTOW Racecourse welcomed the best of Welsh talent to the second Welsh Horse Racing Awards.

The night, held in conjunction with Chepstow’s sister track in Llanelli, Ffos Las Racecourse, saw ten awards given out, recognising the quality of racing in Wales across all areas of the sport, from breeding to track, flat to chase.

The Jockey of the Year award, sponsored by Cotts Equine, went to David Probert.

David has ridden well over a hundred winners in the last year, earning over £1.2m of prize money, and is on course to beat his personal best for the 2019 calendar year.

Young jockeys Sean Bowen and Connor Brace were also recognised for Outstanding Rides of the Year.

The Trainer of the Year category, sponsored by Gain Equine Nutrition, was awarded to Evan Williams.

He earned the most prize money, over £660,000, mainly due to the exploits of Silver Streak in the Welsh Champion Hurdle, Champion Hurdle and other top races.

The Owner of the Year, sponsored by the ROA, went to the Down The Quay Club.

Their star performer Tobefair came back to form this year with a narrow defeat in the Pertemps Final at the Festival, and has won two Cheltenham staying handicaps since then.

Good Vibes, trained by David Evans, took the leading flat horse award sponsored by Floyds Turfcare, Peter Villars and ICL. He was second in the Lowther and won on three occasions, culminating in the Group 3 Cornwallis Stakes.

The leading hurdler award, also sponsored by Floyds Turfcare, Peter Villars and ICL, was awarded to Silver Streak.

Potters Corner won the leading chaser category, sponsored by NAF. The Christian Williams-trained chaser won the Midlands Grand National.

The Rising Star category, sponsored by Great British Racing, was awarded to up-and-coming jockey Ben Jones, and Breeder of the Year, sponsored by the Thoroughbred Breeders Association, went to Llety Farms.

Jackie Coonick, who works for Bernard Llewellyn, won the Stable Staff Award, sponsored by the Arena Racing Company.

She has worked for Bernard Llewellyn's yard for nearly 40 years and accepted her award on behalf of hard-working stable staff across the country.

Stable staff Emma Rees, Arabella Tucker, Christina Berry and the team at Robert Stephens' yard were all recognised for their nominations.

Young trainer Grace Harris, from Shirenewton, also claimed recognition with an Outstanding Training Performance Award for horse Field Exhibition.

The Welsh Jockey of the Year title went to David Probert from Bargoed.

Finally, trainer Milton Bradley was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the end of the evening.

He received a standing ovation from the 200 people in the audience and was joined on stage by his grandson, Chris. Accepting the award from Richard Johnson, Mr Bradley entertained the audience with tales of his career – which began in 1969 – and the champion jockey’s early years in racing, riding for the Chepstow trainer.

This award was sponsored by Dragon TV and Film Studios.
