NEWPORT County AFC are aiming to end a 10-game winless streak in League Two this afternoon when they take on Scunthorpe United and they’re also looking to put a much longer hoodoo behind them.

County have not won a match that has involved an overnight stay since the 1-0 victory at Tranmere Rovers in September 2018.

This season has seen defeats at Colchester United, Bradford City, Morecambe and Millwall and a draw at Grimsby Town in the FA Cup.

Last season, after the wins at Oldham Athletic and Tranmere in September, the Exiles were beaten at Carlisle United, Lincoln City, Grimsby and Colchester, while they drew at Middlesbrough and Morecambe.

“We look at everything and I don’t think we’ve won when we’ve stayed overnight for nearly 16 months,” said manager Michael Flynn.

We don’t go overnight every week, but that’s not a good stat.

“The last one we won after staying overnight was Tranmere (on September 22, 2018).

“Maybe we should just turn up late, knock on the head all the preparation we do and just hope for the best!"

South Wales Argus:

“We’ve tried all different things," added Flynn. "We’ve gone early, we’ve not trained the day before, we’ve trained early and then gone up, we’ve trained halfway up, we’ve trained up there and we’ve gone later so there’s less hanging about at the hotel.

“We’ve done everything you can think of. We’re leaving no stone unturned.

“They just need to get the monkey off their back.

“We’ve had some good results in that time, though. We drew at Middlesbrough and drew at Morecambe on the last day of the season to get into the play-offs.

“So it’s not all been doom and gloom. But that win hasn’t come since Tranmere. And a win is what we want.”

And Flynn points to Scunthorpe’s revival after a difficult start to the season as evidence that his side can turn things around this season.

“I knew they’d pick up, because of the squad they’ve got and the manager and the budget they’ve got,” he said.

“They probably had a bit of a hangover from relegation but that’s over with now.

“Everyone was writing them off at the start of the season and we’re getting written off now.

“But we’re one positive result away from going on a good run. People like Scunthorpe have proved that.

“We’ve just got to make sure we do it sooner rather than later.

“If you look at the table, we’re six points behind where we were last year and we’ve played two fewer games so it’s not all doom and gloom.”
