NEWPORT County AFC manager Michael Flynn is hoping to add one or two more new signings before Friday night’s transfer deadline, and he wants to get a deal for Joe Ledley done “sooner rather than later”.

Ledley is a free agent so he can join a new club after the transfer window closes at 11pm on Friday, but Flynn doesn’t want the long-running saga to go on for too much longer.

The Wales international midfielder was linked with the Exiles in October before joining Championship club Charlton Athletic on a short-term contract.

Ledley has been training with the Exiles over the past few weeks and is still doing so, and he was at Rodney Parade to see the win over Macclesfield Town on Tuesday night.

“Hopefully we might get one or two more in; I’m still looking, still trying,” said Flynn after that win.

“Joe was at the game and he’s still training with us.”

Asked if the ball was in Ledley’s court, the manager said: “Kind of. We’ll see what happens.

“If anything’s going to happen, I’d rather do it sooner than later.

“It’s not going to drag on because, I’ve got to be honest, I’m bored of the questions!

“I know you’ve got to ask them; I understand that. But, trust me, if there is an update, I’ll tell you.”

Wilfried Bony, another former Premier League star, has also been training with County for much of this season but he has finally found himself a new club.

The Ivorian striker, who was released by Swansea City at the end of last season, has joined Saudi Arabian club Al-Ittihad as a free agent.

“This is a good chance to compete for something with a traditional club like this and I feel excited about this,” said Bony, who ended last season on loan at Qatari club Al-Arabi.

Meanwhile, Flynn admits a knee injury picked up by centre-back Mark O’Brien at Leyton Orient last Saturday could change his transfer targets.

“Mark O’Brien is out for a little while now,” said the Exiles boss.

“He’s got a knee problem. He’ll be out for a few weeks so that might alter what I’m looking for [in the transfer market], if I’m totally honest.

Fellow defender Ryan Inniss missed the win over Macclesfield with a calf strain but he should be fit in about a week’s time.

And Kyle Howkins (above) will soon be able to play a full part after recovering from his horror head injury at Maldon & Tiptree in November.

“He’s not quite ready,” explained Flynn. “I thought about it. I was very tempted to play him but I don’t think it would have been fair on him.

“He’s not played 90 minutes for 10 weeks now, maybe longer.

“And to ask him to go into a game that I knew would be end-to-end, I thought it would be a bit too much.

“You could say ‘how’s he going to get minutes if you don’t give them to him?’ but I’ve just got to try to pick the team that I think is going to win the game.

“He would have started in the Trophy [tie against Leicester City under-21s, which was postponed last week].

“But [like everyone else] he’s going to have to work extremely hard and be patient to get into the team. It might come on Saturday, it might not.”
