CRICKET Wales expect the season to go ahead as normal – but will allow clubs to suspend their activities because of coronavirus.

Clubs have been preparing for the start of their campaigns with pre-season fixtures scheduled for next month.

Cricket Wales, one of 39 boards that make up the England and Wales Cricket Board and the governing body for the sport in this country, say there are no plans for a blanket suspension at present.

"Cricket Wales' primary purpose is to promote and enable the safe participation and enjoyment of cricket in Wales by as many people as possible," read a statement.

"We continue to monitor the ever-evolving and fast-moving situation regarding the coronavirus outbreak in the UK.

"We are also in close and regular dialogue with our colleagues at Glamorgan Cricket and Sophia Gardens, in relation to their activities and operations at Wales' premier professional cricket venue.

"Our collective current approach, alongside our colleagues at the England and Wales Cricket Board, is to follow official UK government advice, as most national governing bodies in Wales are.

"In line with the latest official advice, there is currently no specific reason why community sport should not take place, unless we are advised otherwise by the health authorities or government.

"That said, we respect the right of a club or organisation to chose to suspend their own cricket activities, if they feel, on balance, this is the right decision for them locally.

"We would encourage any cricket participants to continue to follow the widely-available public health guidance, with regards to people maintaining good hygiene to delay the spread of the Covid-19 virus.

"We would also advise clubs and other community cricket venues to ensure washing facilities have appropriate provision of hygiene products and we urge participants to follow the public health guidance in environments where they are in close proximity to others."

South Wales Argus:

Glamorgan have cancelled their pre-season training camp in La Manga.

They were due to fly out to Spain on Thursday before returning to Cardiff the following week to continue their preparations for the season.

Instead Matthew Maynard's squad will continue to work on their fitness and skills at the indoor facilities in Sophia Gardens.

Director of cricket Mark Wallace said: 'While cancelling the tour is not ideal, the health of our players and staff is paramount to the club.

"We have excellent facilities at the ground and our players and coaching staff will work hard to make sure the impact on our pre-season preparation is minimal."

Glamorgan's remaining pre-season fixtures are unaffected at this stage with the county building towards their County Championship opener against Middlesex at Sophia Gardens on April 19.

The county are returning to Newport for a pair of Royal London One-Day Cup fixtures with Yorkshire heading to Spytty Park on July 31 and Nottinghamshire visiting on August 2.

However, the ECB are expecting an unsettled domestic season and England's Test series in Sri Lanka was cancelled last week.
