THE South East Wales Cricket League are planning a 40-over competition in August if the green light is given for a return to the field.
No cricket has been played in 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic but outdoor net practice is now allowed in Wales.
That has prompted SEWCL officials to discuss holding a tournament in the second half of the season.
It would be open to South Wales Premier Cricket League teams and those in the west of the country that play in the South Wales Cricket Association.
“Regarding our prospects for cricket matches, we remain hopeful they will be allowed this season and know that the ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board) and Cricket Wales are working hard to achieve that,” read an update.
“If the competition does go ahead, our aim is to give all participating sides at least five 40-over matches.
“This would be via a ‘mini-league’ of six teams, with teams grouped by relative strength, based on last year's tables.
“Pool winners (and possibly runners-up) would play each other on following weekends. Matches will be played on available grounds, allowing those sides with grounds unavailable to play their matches away.
“The competition will be open to all clubs in our area including those from SWPCL and SWCA. “Providing it is allowed, our intention is to start the competition on the first weekend of August - so please keep August free for these fixtures. Pool winners would continue with matches on into September.”
A deadline of July 5 has been set for entries after which pools will be decided and fixtures published.
It depends on the go-ahead being given for cricket matches and the current five-mile restriction being lifted.
All players will have to arrive changed and with their own food and drinks in a blow to those that enjoy overindulging at tea.
