NEWPORT County AFC boss Michael Flynn believes they can add Swansea City to their list of cup scalps, even without the raucous backing of the Rodney Parade faithful.

The Exiles will kick off their season with a mouth-watering Welsh derby against the Swans in round one of the Carabao Cup.

The fixture is scheduled for Saturday, September 5 but the club are waiting to hear about televised games.

There is also dispensation for clubs to play their tie before the start of the international break on Monday, August 31, although time is pressing on and a pair of Guinness PRO14 derbies have been scheduled for Rodney Parade next weekend.

Whenever the game kicks off, the Amber Army won't be in the stands as the Exiles attempt to cause an upset.

Flynn and his squad have returned to training after being sidelined since losing in Carlisle in March while the Swans returned to finish their season, sneaking into the Championship play-offs before being edged out by Brentford.

The manager believes the chance to repeat their exploits against Blackburn, Leeds, Middlesbrough and Leicester is the perfect way to get back under way.

"If it was a normal year it would be a sell-out. Other than maybe Cardiff, I don't think that we could've got a bigger draw, especially at home," said Flynn, whose side earned a Wembley FA Cup replay against Tottenham and have also entertained Manchester City and West Ham in recent seasons.

"They are going to be strong favourites and are going to be in a good position because they have been together longer and haven't had the amount of time off that we have.

"Swansea are a very good team who just got to the play-offs in the Championship, so it's a tough game… but you never write us off at home. As always we will give it our best shot."

South Wales Argus:

Flynn is relishing the chance to go up against Steve Cooper, after predicting the tie when discussing potential signings with the Swansea boss.

"I spoke to Steve a couple of days before about one or two players on loan and we were trying to arrange a friendly. I said to him 'knowing our luck watch us go and draw each other in the cup'.

"Steve is somebody that I have known a long time and get on really well with. He is doing a fantastic job there."

The Swansea game will kick-off County's season, followed by their first group game in the EFL Trophy.

The Exiles get their League Two campaign under way on September 12 and will learn their schedule tomorrow morning.

The EFL fixture lists are announced at 9am with the Exiles now joined in the fourth tier by Southend, Tranmere and Bolton, who dropped down, and Barrow and Harrogate, who headed up.

Swindon, Crewe, Plymouth and Northampton were promoted to League One while Macclesfield were relegated to the National League.
