LAST year’s coach of the year Angus Rogers has encouraged clubs to enter the Argus Sport Awards, saying nominations can give their whole team a lift.
Heads of the Valleys Tang Soo Do martial arts club’s students put Rogers forward for the honour and he pipped stiff competition from Valleys Gymnastics Academy duo Luke Carpenter and Natasha Le-Sauteur to win the gong at the event at Chepstow Racecourse.
There will be no special ceremony in 2020 but Gwent’s sporting heroes will still be toasted – the awards will be held virtually on November 5.
Entries close on September 4 with the categories listed at southwalesargus.co.uk/sportsawards, with Rogers encouraging organisations to get involved.
“Winning last year really elevated the presence of the club, both locally and nationally, with more and more students travelling further afield to attend classes,” he said.
“Entering your local club can do wonders for your team’s morale, especially if you win. It is an excellent way to be recognised for all the hard work that its members and coaches put in week after week.
“If you are passionate about sport and your club, get your entries in today before it is too late!”
Heads of the Valleys have gone from strength to strength since last year with Rogers leaving his day job of teaching music to devote himself to his passion for teaching martial arts.
“We expanded our club from 70 members to 120 members, and added in new classes such a two children classes, Tiny Tigers (four to seven) and Little Valleys Samurais (eight to 14), a lady’s fitness kickboxing class, four-week adult beginner courses, cardio and stretching classes.
“As well as working regularly teaching children during school time with the basics or martial arts and anti-bullying workshops.
“I have also worked one to one with various students with additional learning needs such as autism where I have huge success and am now a board member with the Monmouthshire Stake Holders Autistic Team.”
