FORMER Newport County AFC winger Tony Villars has passed away at the age of 68.

Villars, who passed away on Wednesday, September 9, was a member of the club's youth set-up and also worked as part of the groundstaff during the early days of his career before departing to play for Pontnewydd.

He enjoyed a fruitful spell in the Welsh pyramid system as a teenager before moving to south Wales rivals Cardiff City prior to a Somerton Park return in 1976.

Born in Pontypool, the winger went on to make 33 appearances for the County under Jimmy Scoular, who he was reunited with after their days together with the Bluebirds.

Villars also represented Wales on three occasions in the old British Home Championship.

In 1974, he turned out for his country against England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

In a statement, his family described him as “a quiet and humble person”.

They said that finishing his career with Jimmy Scoular was a fitting end to his career, and spoke of their pride at him having represented Wales on the international stage.

Newport County AFC also offered sincere condolences to Tony’s family and friends at this difficult time.
