NEWPORT County AFC will welcome another Premier League big gun to Rodney Parade after Newcastle hammered Morecambe in the Carabao Cup.

The Exiles earned a place in the fourth round for the first time in their history when they added Watford to their list of cup scalps on Tuesday night.

After upsetting Swansea in round one then beating League Two rivals Cambridge in round two, goals from Tristan Abrahams, Joss Labadie and Padraig Amond earned progress at the expense of the Hornets.

County’s reward is a mouth-watering encounter with the Magpies, who hammered Morecambe 7-0 at the Globe Arena.

County have played Newcastle once in knockout football when beaten 6-0 at St James’ Park in a first round tie in the FA Cup in January, 1922.

The Magpies’ record win, 13-0 was against Newport in October, 1946 but County won the last of the three meetings 4-2 in 1947.

South Wales Argus:

Steve Bruce’s side scored five times in the first half through Joelinton (2), Miguel Almiron, Jacob Murphy and Isaac Hayden.

Jamaal Lascelles added a sixth early in the second half before the Shrimps limited the damage to a late own goal by Sam Lavelle.

The tie will be played next week - likely to be Wednesday as the Magpies are in Premier League action at Spurs on Sunday - with the kick-off to be confirmed once Sky Sports have chosen their televised fixtures.

In recent years County have beaten Leicester, drawn with Spurs and battled hard against Manchester City in Newport.

They also beat Blackburn, Leeds and Middlesbrough before adding the Swans and Watford to their victims.
