PADRAIG Amond says that table-topping Newport County AFC are there to be shot at – and has warned that League Two new boys Harrogate Town will be desperate for a scalp.

The Exiles are top of the table after four wins on the spin against Tranmere, Stevenage, Bradford and Colchester.

They dug deep for the latest of those successes with Amond striking at the death – "A yard out, 91st minute – that's what dreams are made of!" – shortly after County had conceded a leveller.

It may be very early days in 2020/21 but the Irishman hopes the 2-1 win against Colchester will be one to pinpoint come May.

"A victory like that will go a long way. Throughout a season you get important moments and we could look back on that as a really important one," said the Irishman.

South Wales Argus:

"When somebody scores against you so late you can just think about taking a point and be deflated about it, and it would have been a very disappointing two points dropped.

"But that just shows the spirit in the group and the fight – we will go to the end, regardless of how the game is going.

"It's great to get the victory and sit on top of the table even though it's early. It's better to be looking behind you than trying to catch people in front of you."

County are setting the pace but manager Michael Flynn won't let anyone call it a promotion push just yet.

Staying ground is vital, especially when next up is a Harrogate side who are eighth after an impressive start of their own.

"There is not much between the very top of the National League and League Two," said Amond.

"Barrow went to Mansfield on Tuesday and won 4-2 and Harrogate have started the season really well and will be up for it.

"They are going to relish their first season as a Football League club after working really hard to get here.

"Harrogate will want to make a mark and we are there to be shot at now – everyone will want to come here and beat us, but we are ready to go again."

South Wales Argus:

The games are coming thick and fast but Amond doesn't want to be rotated after starting the season on the bench.

"It's non-stop but we are well looked after with our training loads. Ask any footballer and they'd want to just play games," said the striker.

"It is going to be an important few weeks for us and everyone will be used, that's why we have the strongest squad since I've joined the club."

Amond got up and running in League Two with a delightful finish shortly after coming off the bench for Saikou Janneh in Bradford and kept on the goal trail against Colchester.

"It was quite a frustrating period before that but the lads were doing well so there was not much I could do," he said.

"You just have to keep your head down and work as hard as you can. I had a chat with the gaffer about things and it was just a case of trying to take the chance when it comes. Hopefully I can keep going now and chip in with more goals."
