BOSS Michael Flynn is hopeful that Newport County AFC can back up another fine home win by coping with a “horrendous” week on the road.

The Exiles have won 22 points from a possible 24 at Rodney Parade with their latest success a dramatic late win against Morecambe.

A penalty from Matty Dolan secured the spoils after the Shrimpers had cancelled out Padraig Amond’s opener.

The victory means that County head to Grimsby on Tuesday night (kick-off 7pm) as League Two leaders with their game in hand presenting the chance to extend their advantage to four points.

The clash at Blundell Park is followed by trips to Leyton Orient and Salford City - a combined mileage of 1,200 - in a schedule that will test Flynn’s squad to the limit.

“We’ve got a horrendous week with three tough away games and all fairly long distances,” said the manager.

“I hope our squad strength will help because we are going to need them all. We will clock up so many miles and hopefully we won’t get any more injuries.

“The travel does affect them – it’s tiring. As staff we don’t run around the pitch for 95 minutes but even we are really shattered the next day.

“We have 11 points so far (away from home) and if at the end of this we have 20 then it will be some start to the season.”

South Wales Argus:

The Exiles are already promotion contenders and the most encouraging gap isn’t the one point lead to Cheltenham but the four-point lead over fourth-placed Carlisle.

County have shown their resilience with five late wins on home soil, striking after the clock ticked into the 80s against Mansfield, Colchester, Harrogate, Port Vale and now Morecambe.

“That’s the way to win a football match and if you do that 15 times a season in that manner then you are in a very good position,” said Flynn.

“It was a pleasing win against a tough Morecambe team who have got one of the best away records in the division and came to counter.

“We kept going and got a late goal that was nothing more than we deserved."

County will have captain Joss Labadie back from suspension against Grimsby, who lost 2-1 at Colchester on Saturday and sit 20th in the table.

Defender David Longe-King, who suffered a pre-season groin injury, made his long-awaited debut late on against Morecambe.
