MICHAEL Flynn says Newport County AFC are "on the front foot" with new loanees set to arrive at the start of January.

The Exiles are top of League Two at Christmas after a superb start to the campaign and the manager is keen to bolster his squad for a promotion push.

Flynn is closing in on new recruits who are poised to arrive after the festive fixtures against Crawley on Boxing Day, promotion rivals Exeter on December 29 and Southend on January 2.

"There are one or two nearly done, coming in. We have been on the front foot,” said the manager.

"Anyone that I bring in this January will hopefully strengthen the team and the squad. At the minute, they are loans.

“We are more attractive than going somewhere at the bottom of the league. Players have a chance to show what they can do in this situation and try and get a promotion on their CV.

“There will be one or two going back as well, so it’s just about replacing.”

Flynn is in talks with Swindon and Swansea over influential loanees Scott Twine and Brandon Cooper, who are at the club on season-long loans but can be recalled in January.

County have five other players on loan – striker Jamie Proctor (Rotherham) has made 11 appearances, forward Saikou Janneh (Bristol City) has played 12 times but is currently sidelined by a hamstring injury, midfielder Jamie Devitt (Blackpool) has had 10 outings, full-back Aaron Lewis (Lincoln) has played just twice and defender Bradley Webb (Bristol City) has had two appearances in the EFL Trophy.
