NEWPORT County AFC supporters want their side to claim three points this afternoon – with the added bonus of securing a hat-trick of moans from Richie Wellens.

The Salford City manager was unimpressed with the Exiles after an FA Cup loss in November then fumed after a last-gasp Josh Sheehan penalty led to a draw in the north west of England.

Wellens, a leading candidate for the most mardy man in League Two, is unlikely to even crack a smile if the Ammies win in Newport and leapfrog County.

What is it like for Exiles boss Michael Flynn going up against a manager who, at times, comes across as a grouch?

"What do you mean at times?! I know Richie well and have a lot of time for him," said Flynn. "He just wants to win and is one of those people who can't hide what he is thinking.

"He opens his mouth and has called us a pub team and said that we are not as good as the league leaders last season.

"I wouldn't get involved in stuff like that – I don't speak about other teams – but Richie is fine and I have known him a long time and we have a good chat afterwards.

"I am actually looking forward to seeing him – he's a funny character."

Wellens took Swindon up last season but has dropped back down to League Two with the challenge of doing the same with big-spending Salford.

"There is going to be a lot of pressure on Richie but he doesn't mind that," said Flynn.

"The size of their budget is huge, the squad list they have is very, very big and they have options in every position.

"With that squad they should be there or thereabouts. Look at the goal threat – Ian Henderson, James Wilson, Tom Elliott, Ash Hunter – it's an embarrassment of riches in League Two."

Salford head to Newport on the back of a late success at Scunthorpe earned thanks to a defensive mix-up that allowed Henderson to strike.

"They had a good result the other night," said Flynn, whose side drew at the Irons. "They scored late but the three points is all that matters.

"They will be trying to do the same again but hopefully we will come out on top."
