NEWPORT County AFC manager Michael Flynn admits it has been a frustratingly slow transfer window as he closes in on two more targets for their promotion push.

The Exiles head to Oldham Athletic tomorrow looking to strengthen their position in the League Two promotion zone.

However, their bid for League One hinges on Flynn bolstering his squad after the exit of all seven summer loans, notably influential defender Brandon Cooper and Scott Twine.

The boss has signed midfielder Jack Evans from Swansea and brought in attacking midfielder Luke Gambin from Colchester, while young forwards Jake Scrimshaw and Owen Windsor have joined on loan from Bournemouth and West Brom respectively.

Flynn said after Tuesday’s 1-1 draw against Cheltenham that he hoped to make four signings ahead of the trip to Boundary Park but that is unlikely.

South Wales Argus:

“I've managed to get one player in and I am close to another two,” said the manager, who added Gambin on Wednesday.

“It's been frustrating in that it has taken longer than I would have liked but if come the end of the window we have got the right players in it will have been worth it.

“You have got to be patient and make sure you select the right player, not just for on the pitch but off it. It's something that sometimes takes more time than you would like it to.”

Flynn would like to add as many recruits as individuals that he has seen leave.

“I've got work to do on it and I haven't stopped to be honest,” he said. “It will take as long as it has to and that's part of my job.

“You want the right person to come in and blend with the group but it's tough. With the Covid situation a lot of clubs are trying to keep hold of players for as long as possible while they bring others in.

“It's a bit of a slower window than usual in the lower leagues but we've just got to get on with it.”

South Wales Argus:

A striker is top of Flynn’s wishlist to go along with Padraig Amond, Tristan Abrahams, Ryan Taylor, Scrimshaw and Windsor as a forward option.

“I’ve got a list and just missed out on one who would’ve been perfect for us,” said the manager. “He chose to go somewhere else and there’s nothing that I can do about that.

“I had a good conversation with him but you go onto the next target and keep trying to get the next one in. Hopefully one will fall for us.”
