BOSS Michael Flynn has told Newport County AFC supporters to ‘strap yourselves in’ for a tense race for the play-offs despite a draw at rivals Exeter City.

The Exiles remain in seventh place with their destiny in their own hands after the goalless draw against the Grecians, who would have moved above them with victory in Devon.

However, County should have taken all three points at St James Park and saw their lead cut by Salford, who beat Mansfield.

Sixth-placed Forest Green Rovers, Newport, Salford and Exeter remain in a tight contest for two spots, with Carlisle clinging on as contenders.

“It’s still in our own hands but I said it throughout the season that we don’t do things easy,” said Flynn, whose side have home games against Scunthorpe and Cheltenham before a trip to Southend on last day.

“There will be fun and games one way or the other, so strap yourselves in. There will be twists and turns to come.”

County goalkeeper Tom King didn’t have a save to make while Josh Sheehan was denied by a super stop and teenage forward Lewis Collins saw a first-half header saved before failing to take openings after the break.

“We were the better team and played really well. We worked ever so hard for each other, as we know they will, but with a bit more quality in the final third we would have won that game," said Flynn.

“Exeter threw everything at it but we kept our composure, defended well and should have won the game. I can’t ask for any more than they gave me.”

Flynn made just one change late on when he brought on Nicky Maynard for Lewis Collins but counterpart Matt Taylor chased the game, making four attacking substitutions.

“Matty said before the game that they were going to go for it,” said the Newport boss. “I don’t think that it changed much, they put one or two more crosses in the box but we dealt with them quite comfortably.

“We looked like the team that was going to win that game and it’s three good performances on the spin. Hopefully we are hitting form at the right time.”

South Wales Argus:

County will be fancied for victory against 21st-placed Scunthorpe on Tuesday but Flynn is taking nothing for granted against a team on a four-game losing streak.

“We have a tough one on Tuesday, everybody has seen that they have lost a few in a row but they won’t want their season to peter out," he said.

“We have to make sure we have the same attitude, desire and determination, plus a little bit more quality to get the three points to put the pressure on the others.

“I don’t take anything for granted. If you’d said at the beginning of the season that we’d have three games to go, win them all and you are in the play-offs, I am sure we would have taken that.”
