JARED Rosser will continue to run at 13 for the Dragons in the Rainbow Cup with boss Dean Ryan excited by the winger’s pace and power from midfield.

The 23-year-old speedster from Abersychan made his first outing as a centre in the stunning 52-32 win against the Scarlets on Sunday.

Rosser lined up against former Dragons centre Tyler Morgan, a Wales international, but didn't look out of place.

He was forced off early in the second half at Rodney Parade through injury but is set return to midfield in the coming derby clashes with Cardiff Blues and the Ospreys.

"It was a shame but we will see more of him there," said director of rugby Dean Ryan. "That’s what this five or six weeks in the Rainbow Cup gives us.

"We have some real pace coming through with players such as Rio Ryer, so Jared can offer us an alternative at 13.

"He is incredibly powerful and for his first go he looked really comfortable in there. A couple of times he was hesitant on whether to go or not, but this is what these experiences are for.

"Jared is someone to watch out for at 13 and can give us more depth there and more pressure around that selection."

South Wales Argus:

Wales Sevens international Rosser has proved himself as one of the Dragons' fastest and most potent wingers.

Since making his debut in 2017 he has made 54 appearances and scored 20 tries.

The Dragons have fielded Aneurin Owen and Jack Dixon at 13 this season but both are predominantly inside centres, a spot that has been filled by Jamie Roberts.

Nick Tompkins has returned to Saracens after his loan spell and Adam Warren, who is in talks over a new contract, is on the comeback trail from a groin injury.

If Rosser, whose younger brother Ewan is also a winger coming through the Dragons academy, can make a success of the experiment then Ryan will have a longer depth chart and the speedster will have another route to the squad.

“Versatility is about creating more opportunities,” said the director of rugby, who picked Rio Dyer alongside Jordan Williams and Jonah Holmes in the back three against the Scarlets after the loss through injury of Wales hopeful Ashton Hewitt.

“I don’t necessarily think I want players who can play lots of positions, but the strength of our squad will offer opportunities that potentially you wouldn’t see in another squad where there is an established pecking order.

“We don’t have that here so Jared can play 13 and be a threat. That just builds our depth and confidence into next year.”

The Dragons started the Rainbow Cup with a bonus-point win against the Scarlets.

They are not in action this weekend while European semi-finals take place but return against Cardiff Blues at the Arms Park a week on Sunday.

Ryan's men then host the Ospreys with the remaining fixtures in the Rainbow Cup yet to be confirmed after the withdrawal of the South African sides.
