THE Dragons' revived bid to return to private ownership has moved a step closer after an official bid was made to the Welsh Rugby Union.

The governing body took control of the region in a 2017 takeover that included them buying Rodney Parade from Newport RFC.

Dragons chairman David Buttress has long wanted to return to private ownership and a deal, which did not include the Rodney Parade site, was close before the coronavirus pandemic put a spanner in the works.

A bid has been put forward to the WRU, who have since had changes at the top with chief executive Martyn Phillips replaced by Steve Phillips and Rob Butcher following Gareth Davies as chairman.

The aim is for the Dragons to be in private ownership by the start of next season like their regional rivals Cardiff, the Ospreys and Scarlets.
