NEWPORT County AFC’s next generation progressed to the second round of the FA Youth Cup after a 4-3 win over Torquay United.

Goals from Jack Karadogan, Callum Ryan-Phillips and Harrison Bright (2) earned the spoils at Spytty Park in front of first team manager James Rowberry.

Midfielder Karadogan, who was an unused sub in the Exiles’ Carabao Cup win at Ipswich in August, opened the scoring with a strike from outside the box after four minutes.

Torquay levelled from the penalty spot when Brandon Quinn sent Evan Ovendale the wrong way in the 16th minute.

However, County responded swiftly when full-back Bright, who impressed when making his senior debut in the EFL Trophy win against Plymouth in August, made it 2-1 after 18 minutes.

The Exiles pushed for a two-goal cushion with Wales Under-17s international Sonny Lewis, who became the youngest player in the club’s history when facing Cheltenham at the age of 15 last season, and Iestyn Evans going close.

They went 3-1 up when Ryan-Phillips, another who got a taste of senior football against Norwich U21s and Plymouth in the 2020/21 EFL Trophy, nodded in a free-kick after 26 minutes.

County were pegged back in the 54th minute when Lewis Brooks exploited a defensive mix-up but Bright’s second, a close-range header, gave some breathing space with 12 minutes to go.

Torquay made it a nervy finish when Brooks got his second in the 86th minute but County held on for the spoils.
