Wales Under-21s were beaten 1-0 by group leaders Switzerland in their Euro 2023 qualifier at Rodney Parade.
Felix Mambimbi’s 53rd-minute goal decided a closely-fought contest in Newport.
Wales came into the game boosted by Friday’s record 7-0 win in Gibraltar and skipper Brandon Cooper, on his return to Rodney Parade after an impressive loan spell with County last season, almost profited from an early goalmouth scramble.
But Switzerland gradually got on top and Mambimbi went close before Zeki Amdouni smacked a post just before half-time.
Wales goalkeeper George Ratcliffe also reacted smartly to push out a Fabian Rieder shot at his near post.
Switzerland survived late scares as Wales pushed for an equaliser. Billy Sass-Davies saw his effort controversially disallowed and Rhys Hughes’ drive went just wide of a post.
It was Wales' third loss of their Group E campaign with Paul Bodin's side heading to Switzerland in March before hosting Bulgaria at a venue yet to be confirmed.
