DRAGONS scrum-half Rhodri Williams will end his eight-year wait for another cap if Wales suffer any late injury misfortune after being called up for the Six Nations finale.

The 28-year-old has trained with Wayne Pivac’s squad this week because Tomos Williams suffered a head injury against France with an official call-up confirmed on Thursday afternoon.

Gareth Davies has been named as the starter to face Italy in Cardiff on Saturday with Kieran Hardy as his back up.

Backs coach Stephen Jones said at a press conference that there are no fresh injury concerns but Williams is likely to be heavily involved in pre-match preparations at Principality Stadium.

If there is any late drama then the Dragons man could win a fourth cap, eight years after his last appearance on the Test stage.

The scrum-half made his Wales debut against Tonga in the 2013 autumn campaign, then faced Australia and made his Six Nation bow with a try-scoring outing as a replacement against Scotland in 2014.

Williams, who has made 71 appearances since joining the Dragons in 2018, was named in the Wales squad for the summer Tests against Canada and Argentina last year only to withdraw because of a shoulder issue that needed an operation.

He was overlooked for the autumn and initially the Six Nations but has spent this week with the squad in a bid to prove his quality ahead of the summer tour to South Africa.

Three Dragons have been named on the bench for the Italy clash – tighthead Leon Brown, lock Will Rowlands and back row forward Ross Moriarty.
