NEWPORT County AFC stars Finn Azaz and Dom Telford were among those to be honoured at this season’s EFL Awards in London.

Attacker Azaz, on loan from Aston Villa, was named League Two Player of the Season, while Nottingham Forest’s Welsh international Brennan Johnson took the Championship prize.

Azaz was also named in the Football Manager Sky Bet League Two Team of the Season, featuring alongside Exiles team-mate Telford.

With two games of the season left, striker Telford is also on course to finish as League Two’s top scorer, although Forest Green Rovers’ Matt Stevens is only two behind with three to play.

Telford and Stevens missed out to the latter’s Forest Green team-mate Kane Wilson for the League Two Player of the Season honour.

“It feels really good,” said Azaz after claiming his young player accolade.

“It’s been an enjoyable season and when you enjoy your football, you play your best stuff.

“I’m buzzing – it’s a great thing for my CV and a milestone in my journey. My target was to win it for the season and I’ve done that.”

He added: “I should’ve got better stats last season but it just so happens that I got them this season. I just tried to keep on scoring and assisting.

“This year, I’ve had a little bit more freedom with the role that the manager has given me at Newport.

“It’s been nice to have that freedom to express myself a little bit more.”

Also among the prizes was former County loan ace Scott Twine, now at MK Dons, who was crowned League One Player of the Season.

Having hit double figures for both goals and assists this campaign, the midfielder has impressed as MK Dons continue to press at the top end of the table.

“It’s a chance I’ve been working towards for at least a year or so,” he said. “This year, I just wanted to kick on from that and make sure it wasn’t a fluke or a one season thing.

“I can’t speak highly enough of the club from the way they made me feel from day one – it honestly feels like I’ve been here five or 10 years.

“Everyone there has made me feel welcome from the first minute.”

Meanwhile, Welsh managers Nathan Jones (Luton Town) and Rob Edwards (Forest Green) were named Championship Manager of the Season and League Two Manager of the Season respectively.
