NEWPORT County AFC legend Roddy Jones has died at the age of 75.

Jones, a lifelong County fan, made 323 appearances and scored 71 goals despite being a part-timer while working at Alcan.

He made his debut at Colchester in 1969/70 and starred in the 1972/73 squad that went agonisingly close to promotion from the Fourth Division when edged out by Aldershot on goals average.

Jones returned as player-coach in 1983 and was inducted into the club’s hall of fame in 2009.

"The thoughts of everyone at Newport County AFC are with the loved ones of Roddy. May he rest in peace," said a club statement.

“He was a truly wonderful player – it was phenomenal to achieve what he did playing part-time,” said County stalwart Tim Thraves. “He was a legend and real fans’ favourite.”
