NEWPORT County AFC stepped up their preparations for the new season with friendlies at Weston-Super-Mare and Torquay United this weekend.

The matches were an opportunity for most of the players to get a first 90 minutes under their belt, after previous 45 and 60 minute shifts so far in pre-season.

Friday evening saw James Rowberry’s side win 4-0 against Weston, with loanee Chanka Zimba getting amongst the goals.

Before the games, Rowberry said the sides he would field would be mixed, with his starting eleven for the trip to Sutton not yet nailed down.

However, it was a more senior looking side that lined up at Plainmoor for the goalless draw with the National League side.

Friday night saw the return of Priestley Farquharson, playing 45 minutes on his return from a knee injury that’s ruled him out since February.

County got off to a flying start, with Lewis Collins opening the scoring after just three minutes having been played clean through on goal and slotting it low off the right-hand post.

Cardiff City loanee Zimba put the Exiles 2-0 up after 29 minutes with a tap-in set up by Aaron Lewis.

Just before the break, Harrison Bright added a third from close range, as he met fellow academy graduate Lewys Twamley's deep cross from the left.

Skipper Matt Dolan rounded off the scoring in the 84th minute with a flicked header from Robbie Willmott's left-sided corner.

Saturday afternoon saw County frustrated in the heat at Gary Johnson's Torquay.

Rowberry’s side again started brightly, with Offrande Zanzala going close and Adam Lewis’ free kick curling just wide.

Just after the half hour mark, Lewis’ cross was too high for Omar Bogle, but Cameron Norman ghosted in at the far post and directed his effort back across the face of the goal in wide.

Lewis was at the heart of things again just before the break, with an effort from just inside the box tipped out for a corner.

Early in the second half, Aaron Wildig headed over Lewis' cross from the left and soon after Joe Day was needed to make a superb diving save to his right to keep the game goalless.

With 20 minutes left, Bogle came the closest to breaking the deadlock, seeing his powerful strike tipped onto the bar after his initial free kick was blocked by the wall and rebounded into his path.

Rowberry's side now face one final match, away to newly-promoted Forest Green Rovers, next Saturday, before the League Two season begins with a trip to Sutton.
