NEWPORT County AFC are fearing a lengthy lay-off for striker Offrande Zanzala – a blow that will lead to manager James Rowberry moving for a forward before the transfer deadline.

The Exiles have taken one point from their first four League Two games after an opening day draw at Sutton was followed by losses to Walsall, Bradford and Salford.

Zanzala started the first two league games and made an impression off the bench in the Carabao Cup upset at Luton.

However, the 25-year-old then suffered a tight hamstring in training and after missing out at Bradford as a precaution, the rapid forward is set for a lengthy lay-off.

“We were waiting on a second scan for ‘Oz’ and I am fearful to be honest,” said Rowberry.

“It’s on his tendon and something has come back on his second scan, so I need clarification on that and will know more by Friday’s press conference.”

County are now down to Omar Bogle, Lewis Collins, Chanka Zimba and Will Evans as their options up front.

Asked if he needed to act in the transfer market, Rowberry said: “Yes, but I have got a very supportive board and a chairman who is very understanding.

“Hopefully we will be able to do something to make us stronger with ‘Oz’ being out.”

County are waiting on scans after midfield pair Aaron Wildig and Robbie Willmott limped off in the weekend defeat to Bradford.

They are set to miss Saturday’s home clash with Tranmere but Rowberry is hopeful they could be back next week, when the Exiles host Portsmouth in the Carabao Cup and head to Harrogate in the League.
