NEWPORT Gwent Dragons coach Paul Turner is searching for a quality new outside half and a key forward in time for the start of next season.

They would replace Ceri Sweeney and Michael Owen who are both quitting the Dragons when their contracts are up at the end of the season.

Owen is leaving to join Guinness Premiership club Saracens while Sweeney is moving to neighbours Cardiff Blues.

"There comes a time of the season when we must decide on players, but they made the decision for us, that's the name of the game," said Turner about the pair.

"But we plan to bring in players to replace them and we are continuing our search to add quality for next season.

"Our main duty is to try to build a side which will be competitive when we move into a refurbished ground.

"We will try to bring in some quality in key positions to drive this region forward.

"Ideally we felt this process should have started in September, but instead it started at the end of January/early February."

Turner said: "Last year we were resigned in January to losing Ian Gough and I felt had I been able to make a decision at that time the shop was full and we could have gone out and been robust in our approach.

"But I wasn't able to go out into the market until June.

"We are well aware that Michael and Ceri were out of contract, but I need more than adequate replacements.

"We want a cracking end to the season and I'd like to bring in a core replacement.

"A number ten is one and I'm looking at bolstering the pack."

Turner, meanwhile, says tomorrow night's Magners League game against Edinburgh and their next against Scottish rivals Glasgow, both at home, will decide the outcome of their season.

"These two games will define our season," he said.

"Eight or ten points would put us up there in the mix, but if we don't get them we'll know where we are.

"It's important we try to win these two games, we could do with two on the trot now."

Turner revealed that if skipper Colin Charvis had returned tomorrow night after his knee injury he would have risked being out for the rest of the season, so he withdrew from the side yesterday morning.

"Colin had a nasty injury against Perpignan but typically he made us aware that he could be ready for this game," he said. "We had to make a call and had he returned early he could have been out for the rest of the season whereas now he can rest for another three weeks."

But Kevin Morgan, who captains the side, Rhodri Davies, Hugh Gustafson and Joe Bearman all return to the team after injury while Jamie Ringer is on the bench.
