CWMCARN Paragon's Andrew Williams' fast growing reputation as one of the most talented young riders in the country was greatly enhanced after his brilliant performance in the recent World Cyclo-Cross Championships held at Treviso, Italy.

Selection to the British squad, although a surprise, was totally warranted due to his superb ride in the National Cyclo-Cross Championships, where he gained a silver medal after a thrilling race in which he pushed reigning champion Alex Paton all the way to the finish line. The similarity between the two courses also assisted Williams' inclusion, with lots of flat technical sections where he could use his powerful road skills.

Seventy-five riders from 16 countries lined up for the start with Williams on the fifth row. A pre-race warning of a frantic dash for positions at the first corner was well founded as a massive crash occurred with the Cwmcarn rider taking an unwanted trip over his handlebars, a fall that left him third from last, not the best of starts.

The next two laps proved why Williams was selected, as he powered his way through the field and by the third lap he was the highest placed British rider.

The final lap saw Williams consolidate his position in the race as he fought for top GB spot with fellow Brit, Batchelor. At the finish line it was an excellent 38th place overall and second best British rider, an outstanding performance by the 16-year-old Cwmcarn student competing in his first ever world title race.

After the race, the ever modest Williams was quick to thank the staff at British and Welsh cycling for their support and commitment to his career and of his participation: "I really enjoyed the experience."

Prior to his world ride in Italy, Williams contested his first road race of the 2008 season, the tough Perfs Pedal Race at Rowlands Castle, Hampshire. Sixty-nine of the top British roadmen contested the event covering six-and-a-half laps of an undulating six-and-a-half mile circuit.

A number of breaks went away and were pulled back with Williams always in touch with the leading chasers.

With just over a lap to go and the peloton together James Stewart (KFS) jumped away from the bunch to gain a 40 second gap. With the line approaching his lead was ten seconds ahead of second placed Andrew Bye (Sigma) with Williams and Luke Rowe in a tight sprint for third place which went to Rowe. The Perfs is a great indicator of who has good legs for the season start and Williams proved he is right on track for another outstanding year on the road.
