NEWPORT County AFC manager James Rowberry intends to get three points at Stevenage on Tuesday and then change a winning team.

The Exiles had a weekend off after their League Two clash with Swindon Town was postponed after the death of the Queen.

The attention swiftly changed to Tuesday's scheduled trip to Stevenage, who sit second in the table after a strong start to the season.

They have taken 16 points from a possible 21 while County are down in 17th after claiming just seven.

Rowberry's side saw a four-game winning streak ended by Grimsby in Newport last time out and he is likely to change the XI at Stevenage.

However, the boss doesn't want to just tinker after good displays given that he feels he has a strong squad at his disposal.

"We have won four out of five in all competitions and have almost had a league team and a cup team," said Rowberry, whose squad beat Portsmouth in the Carabao Cup and Exeter in the EFL Trophy in addition to successes against Tranmere and Harrogate.

"I don't particularly want to have that and I have got to get in the mindset, and so do the players, that we can always change a winning team and that it doesn't just happen off the back of defeats.

"Players need to be mindful that sometimes different games dictate different personnel. A team against Swindon might be different to one needed against Stevenage.

"We will be ready for different challenges that come up and that was one of the big learning curves for me from last season in this division.

"You need to keep people fresh and make changes at the right time. You play against some that have more of a physical prowess than a technical prowess.

"If we play a technical team who take the ball then we might need to have high energy in certain areas of the pitch. Play a team who are physical and direct then we might need different personnel."

Midfielder Scot Bennett is a doubt for the Stevenage game with a thigh injury and the other starters felt the heat in training last week.

"The message to the players is that there are opportunities for everybody to stake a claim to be in the team," said Rowberry.

"I wouldn't call it tinkering, I'd call it rotation and I don't want players thinking that if they are coming out of the team that it's necessarily down to poor performance.

"It might be because of horses for courses; I feel we have a strong squad and I've got to utilise it."
