CWMBRAN super-featherweight Jamie Arthur rolled back the years to utterly dominate the entertaining Ghanaian Ayitey Mettle.

Arthur, Wales' only Commonwealth Games gold medallist in the past 50 years, was making his first professional appearance since hanging up his gloves in 2005.

While it is difficult to assess how much of a toll Arthur's hiatus has taken on him from this particular fight, the early signs are certainly encouraging.

Mettle clearly arrived in the Principality aiming only to survive the six three- minute rounds, his celebrations at losing 60-54 making this abundantly clear.

However, Arthur kept his cool as Mettle strutted and jutted around the ring, rarely taking the trouble to do the more boring things like throw punches or try to win the fight.

This was similar to Gary Lockett's night of frustration against Ayittey Powers, however unlike Lockett on that occasion, Arthur remained focused and disciplined, making sure he didn't make any mistakes.

Arthur began cautiously, but closed the first round with a lightning right/left combination. He continued to pick his shots in rounds two and three before a huge right jab rocked Mettle in round four, but the durable African stayed on his feet.

Referee Wynford Jones was clearly getting frustrated with the amount of showboating and running from Mettle, but he allowed the fight to end with Arthur well in the ascendancy.

Watched by his family at ringside, it was Arthur's young son (who one would imagine was watching his dad fight professionally for the first time) who summed things up best. "You're the winner dad, you're easily the winner," he shouted.
