THE Dragons hope to prosper from harsh home truths when they host the brutal Bulls at Rodney Parade on Friday.

Dai Flanagan’s men are on a six-game winless streak and suffered a United Rugby Championship shocker at the 14-man Scarlets on New Year’s Day.

They lost a 17-16 half-time lead in a 33-17 humbling in Llanelli that has been followed by some straight talking at the Ystrad Mynach training base in a swift and challenging five-day turnaround.

“We are a gutted bunch,” said head coach Flanagan. “There were certain elements of that game that weren’t what we stand for.

“What I like about this group is that they are really honest and they have reflected well.

“We've got a short turnaround and the world is against us, but we are an optimistic group and will work our backsides off to get right for Friday night.”

The Dragons earned plenty of praise for their efforts in the first block of the URC when they eclipsed last season’s paltry two wins.

However, they have endured five losses and a draw at the Lions since the break for the autumn internationals and their Scarlets showing led to strong criticism for the first time since Flanagan took the reins.

“Tough times make tough people, so let’s crack on,” said the head coach. “This place has had some torrid times in the past but we have to support each other.

“We certainly won’t turn on each other, even through all the losses this is an exciting place to be.

“This group are so tight that there are no holds barred in meeting and sessions. It is important in short turnarounds, and this week specifically, that there are some honest truths in the room.

“It's a little bit more 'tell' from the coaches because that gets a bit deeper more quickly. It's black and white with what is non-negotiable.”

The Dragons now face a Bulls side (kick-off 7.35pm) that finished as runners-up in their first URC campaign and currently sit fourth in the table.

Jake White has brought a strong squad to Wales in a bid to build momentum ahead of next week’s home Champions Cup clash with Exeter after derby defeats to the Stormers and Sharks.

“The Bulls’ performances have been good but they will be disappointed with the outcomes,” said Flanagan. “They are coming here fully loaded because they need results.

“The Bulls are made of tough stuff, we know what is coming and need to be prepared.”
