GWENT potter Darren Morgan shows no sign of slowing up after hitting his first competive 147 break in matchplay.

The 56-year-old estimates that he has hit three figures for maximums in practice but had fallen short of the achievement in competitive play, missing the final green three times.

However, Morgan finally got the 147 in the WBSA senior event in Ammanford when playing north Walian Gareth Edwards in the second round.

“Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would have one in a match so late in my career, it just come out of nowhere and I could not believe how calm I was all the way through to completing it,” said Morgan.

“It was great with all the other tables stopping to watch and quite a big crowd descended around my table, which was a fantastic experience and all the better for not missing.

“I have been told that at the moment I am the only amateur player playing in a Welsh event ever to make a 147, which is a record and they also think I am the oldest player in the world to have a competitive 147 at 56 as an amateur.

“I have also been told that, to their knowledge, no professional of this age has hit a competitive one as well, what a unexpected record to possibly be holding.

“It’s great to know that I am still achieving new things as I get older long may it continue and what a start to 2023.”

Morgan will return to the Crucible in May at the Senior World Championships in Sheffield.
