NEWPORT County AFC manager Graham Coughlan is hungry for more after a superb 3-1 win at Tranmere Rovers that puts them on the brink of League Two safety.

The Exiles won 3-1 at Prenton Park thanks to first-half goals by midfielder Aaron Wildig and striker Charlie McNeill, then Calum Kavanagh’s clincher with nine minutes to go.

Regan Hendry denied them a clean sheet in added time but it was a comprehensive success that lifts County to 16th, 12 points above the relegation zone.

“Tranmere was always going to be a big challenge but the boys were outstanding, each and every one of them,” said Coughlan.

“The bench had a big contribution as well and it was a really good team performance, and we want more of that.

“But it is just three points, a win after a really good performance, and we’ve had a lot of them which is pleasing.

“That victory and those goals were in our locker and one thing that we always do is score – Carlisle [on January 14] was the last time we didn’t score.

“I am delighted for the lads because we have been on the verge of winning games but haven’t got over the line. To come through at such a tough place is testament to their character.

“It was really, really positive but let’s not rest on our laurels, lets go and get some more victories on the board.”

County had to ride out an early storm when Tranmere tested them from corners and free-kicks but then took control thanks to the quickfire double.

“We spoke before the game about pressure, the environment and the noise; we had to manage those factors because Tranmere rely on heavily on momentum when the noise comes from the stand,” said Coughlan.

“A lot of teams could go under and we didn’t, we stood up to it and headed everything that came into our box.”

The only negative for Coughlan – a former central defender – was Hendry’s scrappy goal as the final whistle approached.

“We conceded at the end, the clean sheet was there for us and on another day that could have hurt us,” he said at the start of the interview.

Central defender Priestley Farquharson and left-back Aaron Lewis missed the game with niggles but should be fine for the next game, which is at Colchester on Saturday April 1.
