ABERGAVENNY Town will attempt to keep in the winning groove when they head to Newport City in round one of the Welsh Cup on Friday evening after a dramatic derby success.

The Pennies took the spoils 2-1 against Cwmbran Celtic at Pen y Pound Stadium last Friday, their first points of a tough start to the campaign.

Cwmbran led for most of the derby clash thanks to Lewis Iles’ early strike but Abergavenny levelled after 80 minutes through Paolo Marenghi when he drove in a shot from the edge of the box.

Danny Elliott’s side then turned one point into three in added time when Rhys Schwank kept his cool from the penalty spot.

Cwmbran will attempt to channel their frustration at letting points slip away when they host Pontardawe in the league on Saturday but it’s Welsh Cup action for a raft of Gwent clubs.

Abergavenny look to back up that success when they make the trip to Spytty Park to take on Newport City, who are mid-table in Ardal SE.

Abertillery Bluebirds host Caerphilly in the cup after they also got up and running in Cymru South last weekend when they drew 2-2 with Pontardawe.

It was 1-1 after Kyle Williams levelled for the Gwent side just before half-time before the visitors got their noses back in front.

The Bluebirds looked set for another defeat but then Rhys Thomas popped up in stoppage time to get them up and running at the sixth time of asking.

Pill, who stunned Cymru Premier Cardiff Met in the second round last season, make the trip to Chepstow Town while Cwmbran Town travel to Aber Valley.
