NATHAN Wood has left Newport County AFC to join Cork City on loan until the summer.
The 26-year-old attacking midfielder has made the move to the League of Ireland First Division club in order to get regular game time after being a fringe figure of late.
Wood, who was released by County after coming through the academy, returned to the club from Cymru Premier Penybont last summer on a two-year contract.
He has made 18 appearances in all competitions and scored his first professional goal in the EFL Trophy win at Cheltenham.
Wood, a Manchester United fan since childhood, came on as a substitute at the death in the FA Cup tie against the Red Devils on Sunday and will now head to Ireland to play in the second tier.
“This has all happened very quickly, but I am really looking forward to getting over to Cork and meeting up with my team mates," he said.
“I have had a good chat with the manager about his plans for the season, and I am really excited by what he has had to say. I know it’s a big club with a really good fanbase, so I am looking forward to being part of it.”
The Irish domestic season is yet to get under way with Cork kicking off on February 16 against Kerry at Turner’s Cross.
The campaign runs through to October, although Wood is scheduled to return for the start of the Exiles’ pre-season.
