NEWPORT City will hunt promotion in Penybont on Friday evening when they aim to repeat their cup win against Cefn Cribwr.

The sides clash in a play-off at the SDM Glass Stadium (kick-off 7.30pm) for the right to play in Cymru South after finishing as runners-up in Ardal SE and SW.

The Steelmen are aiming to make it a double success this season after lifting the FAW Amateur Trophy in April.

They have had an impressive campaign in Ardal SE but that wasn’t enough to deny impressive Trethomas Bluebirds the title.

The Bluebirds have gone up automatically after winning 25, drawing three and losing just twice, one of those to Newport after they had already secured top spot.

The Steelmen will head to Bridgend full of confidence thanks to a superb 2024.

Sam Houldsworth’s side kept the heat on Trethomas with an impressive winning streak that went back to a draw with Risca on December 30.

Cramming fixtures in, they did suffer a 1-0 loss to Treowen Stars earlier this month and play their final game of the league season against Treharris Athletic Western this evening.

However, the big one is on Friday when facing a Cefn Cribwr side who were pipped to the SW title by Penrhiwceiber Rangers.

The teams have already met once this season and it was Newport that triumphed in the semi-finals of the FAW Trophy.

They fell behind early on but responded through Rhyse Hudson, Cole Jarvis and Calum Bateman to lead 3-1.

Cefn Cribwr cut the gap deep in first-half stoppage time but Martyn Mickiewicz scored the winner in the 89th minute, even if there was still time for the Ardal SW club to score a third.

The Steelmen went on to beat Penrhyncoch 5-4 in a thrilling final.
