NELSON Jardim admits Newport County AFC are having problems with the “ugly side of the game” at the start of the season.

The Exiles conceded a last-gasp winner when going down 3-2 at Cheltenham in their League Two opener on Saturday and on Tuesday night suffered a 4-1 defeat to Leyton Orient at Brisbane Road.

The League One O’s eased into the second round of the Carabao Cup after hitting the front inside the first minute through Daniel Agyei.

Diallang Jaiyesimi scored in added time and then Brandon Cooper headed a third five minutes after the restart.

James Clarke gave the Exiles something to cheer when he nodded in an Anthony Glennon free-kick on the hour but Charlie Kelman clinched the spoils in the 74th minute.

All four goals were sloppy from a County point of view, that after three preventable strikes at Whaddon Road.

Jardim said: “It was a disappointing night. I think you could see that we were trying to create something but we have problems defensively. That ugly side of the game where we were lacking and conceded four goals.

“The scoreline was probably a little bit harsh for the boys but we have to accept the outcome and do much better.

“We conceded in the first minute of the game and the last minute before half-time, which affected us but in between I think you could see we had a team trying to compete.

“Second half was better but we need to address the defensive side of the game.”

County play on home soil for the first time under Jardim on Saturday when they welcome much-fancied Doncaster Rovers to Rodney Parade.

The Yorkshire side thrashed Accrington 4-1 on opening weekend and enjoyed a 2-0 League Cup win at League Two rivals Salford on Tuesday night.
