NEWPORT County AFC striker Hamzad Kargbo is set for surgery on his injured shoulder and faces three months on the sidelines.

The towering forward suffered a dislocated shoulder on his Exiles debut in the League Two opener at Cheltenham.

The 22-year-old, who signed after a successful trial following his release by QPR, made an impression in a brief cameo but then suffered the blow, which led to County finishing with 10 men and conceding a goal in the 96th minute to lose 3-2.

Kargbo is now set to go under the knife to sort out the issue with the powerful youngster then targeting a November return.

“We have to make a decision whether he will have surgery or not,” said head coach Nelson Jardim.

“If he does have surgery then we expect him back in three months while if he didn’t have surgery it would be four weeks, with the risk of it happening again.

“The wise decision would be to have surgery then we will be sure that he will be back in three months and good to go.

“It’s very disappointing for him, he is a nice person who works hard and when I decided to give him a chance in that game he made a huge impression.

“I thought ‘wow, we have got something here’ but then we had to play six minutes without him, when we conceded the goal. We lost that game and we have lost him for a few months.”

County will still be without influential midfielder Bryn Morris for Saturday’s game against Doncaster.

The 28-year-old, who played in every game last season, has been out of action with tendonitis since the July friendly against Pontypridd.

Jardim hopes that Morris will return to add some welcome experience in next weekend’s home fixture against Accrington.

“Bryn has started doing some ball work and I expect him to be fully integrated with the team next week,” said Jardim.

Winger Michael Spellman is also out for another week with a muscle injury while forward Oliver Greaves, who scored on his EFL debut at Cheltenham, remains a doubt for Doncaster.

The summer signing has a history of knee injuries and was left out of Tuesday’s 4-1 League Cup defeat at Leyton Orient as a precaution after playing an hour at Whaddon Road and reporting some swelling.
