CHEPSTOW Town have launched a fundraiser for defender Iestyn Davies after he was diagnosed with cancer.
The 20-year-old, who has spent the last two seasons with the Ardal South East club and was named players’ player of the year in May, has stage two Hodgkin Lymphoma and has stopped work.
Davies has featured in five games this season – scoring against Abertillery in the league – and has a determination to get back playing at Larkfield Park.
“He's been a key figure on and off the pitch over the last two season here at Larkfield Park and we're confident he will back doing what he does best playing football in no time at all in the new year,” read the statement on gofundme.com.
“He has played the first few games of the season and been man of the match showing he’s got the fight still despite having such challenging news personally.
“He's even told the chairman he can wait to be back out there playing with his teammates.
"Moments like this are what singles Iestyn out for all his good qualities, not wanting to be away from his football and being back on the pitch with his friends doing what he loves.
“As a club we felt the best way we could support him is to be there for him emotionally and financially as best we can through this very difficult time in his life.”
Chepstow state that Davies’ treatment will take around four months and he will be unable to work and earn a wage in that period.
“We are looking for the support from fellow clubs in the footballing community and our close community here in Chepstow itself to support Iestyn through this very difficult period,” they continued.
“Anything at all that you can spare so we can give Iestyn every chance in his treatment to focus on his health and not his finances.
“We see this as a key step to enabling Iestyn to really be able focus on himself with the support of his family and everyone else around him.”
