TRETHOMAS Bluebirds will need to keep some ‘Magic Daps’ quiet if they are to continue their superb start to the season in Ystrad Mynach on Friday evening.

The Ardal South East champions are setting the pace in Cymru South thanks to four straight wins, while they have also earned a shot at Cymru Premier Barry Town United in the third round of the Nathaniel MG Cup.

Standing in their way of a fifth maximum haul at CCB Centre for Sporting Excellence are Trefelin BGC (kick-off 7.45pm), who are three points back in second place after an impressive start themselves.

The visitors boast Lee Trundle in their ranks with the Swansea legend fresh from two goals and an assist in their 3-1 win against Llantwit Major.

The 47-year-old has been a firm fixture in Welsh club football in recent seasons with action at Neath, Llanelli, Haverfordwest, Ammanford, Mumbles and now a second spell with Trefelin.

“He’s 47 and still knocking goals in,” said Trethomas manager Mark Dunford. “He has kept himself in decent shape and doesn’t lose that goal-scoring instinct.

“As is to be expected, he has lost some stamina and ability to get around the pitch but give him chances and the ball will end up in the back of your net.

“He can still produce that magic and it’s a big test for us; we know how he functions these days and have to be ready to counteract that as well as we can.

“It’s great for the league to have him playing and if it pulls a few more people in then great – it’s first versus second, although we are only in August, and should be a great occasion.”

The Port Talbot side also boast Keane Whitmore in their ranks, the 17-year-old younger brother of Kai, who announced himself at Newport County last weekend with a thunderous goal from distance in his first League Two start.

Trethomas will hope to keep their momentum going with six points on offer over Bank Holiday weekend – Trefelin on Friday and then Caerau Ely away on Monday.

They eased past Taffs Well 3-0 last time out thanks to goals by Will Bevan, Ethan Edwards and Gareth Tedstone but manager Dunford stresses that nobody is getting carried away.

“Our aims remain the same, to do what we do as well as we can to see where that takes us,” he said.

“We have tinkered a bit and brought a few players in but I feel that it has shown that we were performing at this level last year [when winning Ardal South East].

“We are riding the wave and will see where that wave takes us but there are sure to be some challenging times ahead and we are ready for that.

“We’ve got two really tough games with a quick turnaround, so that is going to test us a little bit and it will show what depth teams have got.

“We will have to look at the squad and see how things pan out over the weekend. The boys are in good spirits and are working hard.”

Cwmbran Celtic got their campaign up and running with a 1-0 win at Penrhiwceiber Rangers last weekend thanks to Jude Bull’s strike.

They will aim to build on that when they travel to Taffs Well before welcoming Ammanford to Avondale Motor Park Arena on Monday afternoon.

Newport City, fourth in the table after two wins and two draws, host Goytre United on Friday before heading to Penrhiwceiber Rangers on Monday.

It’s the second qualifying round of the FAW Welsh Cup and that means there is just one game in Ardal SE with Abergavenny Town entertaining Undy.

The hosts are unbeaten after being relegated last season and, after starting the season with three draws, have won their last two.

Undy are looking to respond after a 4-0 home defeat to Brecon Corries that means their goals against column is on 21 after five games.
