THE trend of setting unprecedented standards appears to be something of a norm for St Joseph’s Boxing Club Newport.
The end of last season’s championships saw a record seven Welsh champions and three British champions crowned.
To begin this season’s title-chasing campaign, the club have entered a whopping 14 entries into the Welsh Box Cup, an event hosted by the Welsh Amateur Boxing Association at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff.
The St Joseph’s contingent’s preparations for the event have been buoyed by the return of ex-boxer and former coach Ian Rogers who, after a change of employment, has recently returned to the club fold.
Coach Bill Reynolds said: “Ian’s return has proved to be an asset to everyone at the club, I was lucky enough to coach him when he boxed for us many years ago and it is clearly evident that his enthusiasm for the club and the sport has not waned in the slightest.”
The Welsh Box Cup is for schoolboy and youth boxers and has seen entries from all over the country. The tournament starts on Friday with the finals on Sunday.
