A GLUT of injuries to back row forwards means that Dan Lydiate will wear his scrum cap rather than a coaching hat in the United Rugby Championship opener against the Ospreys.
The Wales legend is taking the first steps of his coaching career and will be a contact area specialist for the Rodney Parade club this season.
That is a move mooted by boss Dai Flanagan to the Argus at the end of last season.
However, Lydiate has not hung up his boots and has been retained as the Dragons as an emergency option.
That has come sooner than expected and the 36-year-old will be on the bench for the URC opener against his former Ospreys teammates in Newport tomorrow rather than on the gantry.
The Dragons are without Aaron Wainwright, Taine Basham, Solomone Funaki, Ollie Griffiths and Lydiate’s experience has got the nod ahead of George Young.
Head coach Dai Flanagan said: “We’re pleased that Dan is taking on a new combined role and feel this is a natural progression for him.
“He’s a hugely influential individual, on and off the field, who is ready to take the next step in his career.
“Dan has relished coming home to Dragons and has made a big impact every time he has featured for us.
“He has a huge amount to offer and has been coaching the squad over the summer, but with current injuries he still has an important role as a player here.”
Lydiate is set to make his 96th appearance for the Dragons and move within touching distance of a century, although that will depend on performances and the fitness of his fellow back rowers.
Basham could well come back into the mix for Leinster away in round two next Friday.
