Chepstow Boxing club members gathered to say farewell to coach Doug Lewis, 83 on his retirement from coaching.
Lewis often coached and trained Rosie Eccles, opening the club premises in Chepstow on Sundays to give her extra training time.
In a tribute, Chepstow BC’s head coach Steve Woods said: “Doug has been one of our most reliable and knowledgeable coaches for the last 20 years and has decided to retire.
“Doug called into the gym to say his final goodbye to the members and we presented him with a hand-made corner of a boxing ring trophy-style gift.
“He has been an absolute solid team member always going way beyond what most would do to help our members and regularly opened the gym and gave extra coaching to those competing in championships, and for Rosie Eccles when she was in training for the Commonwealth Games and Olympics.
“Doug also kept the gym in tip-top condition cleaning, mopping and vacuuming, sorting the gloves out ready for the next session.
“He will be hugely missed by myself, the other coaches and all members.
“We wish him the very best in retirement, although I have no doubt he will call into the gym now and then and will keep up to date with everyone’s progress - I could not have had a better person by my side,” Woods said, adding the club is to hold its next show at the Severn View social club on Saturday, September 27.
