Chepstow Boxing Club's head coach was delighted as some of his boxers competed in the Barum Box Cup in North Devon at the weekend.

"We took five boxers to the three-day event and I think we surprised a few people with our performances," he said later.

"Oliver Vaughan boxed on all the days winning gold, Karrell Islam boxed in a semi-final and although he lost he put in a great effort and took the bronze medal.

"Peter Mullane boxed in the semi-final on Saturday then the final on Sunday, winning both bouts to take the gold medal. Jesse Williams boxed in a straight final on Sunday, winning gold as well, and finally Terry Mullane beat the English champion on Saturday by a unanimous decision, then lost in the final against the current European gold medallist. Terry got the silver medal.

"What a fantastic tournament this was for us. We’ve started the season punching above our weight.

"I think a lot of coaches and judges down there were surprised by the talent Chepstow BC brought to the show and we raised a few eyebrows I can tell you.

"For such a small club compared to some of these massive clubs we certainly punch above our weight.

"Next weekend Jesse Williams will be out again boxing on the Pantside show."
