Valley Stadium greyhound racing ban could cost £15 million

Valley Stadium has said that plans by the Welsh Government to ban greyhound racing could result in a £15 million economic loss to the area.

The warning was made during a recent visit by deputy First Minister Huw Irranca-Davies.

Anna Jeffrey, a trainer at the stadium, said: "My dogs mean the world to me.

"I hope the Minister saw for himself that they receive care far beyond that of most household pets.

"If this ban goes ahead, I lose my livelihood—that impact hits not just me, but my family and everyone in our community who loves and cares for our greyhounds."

The stadium has undergone major investment in recent years, including new regulatory standards introduced in 2023.

Officials say it now serves as a community hub and model of best practice.

Katie Bennison, promoter at Valley Stadium, said: "The proposed ban would be catastrophic—it risks worsening dog welfare, not improving it, by increasing travel distances for Welsh greyhounds.

"It would also destroy jobs."

The stadium says the ban would wipe out more than £15 million in projected media rights income over the next five years.
